Whatever your appetite in trout fishing there is something for you at Westlow, from specimen hunting to purist fishing.

Monthly stockings ensure catchable fish for the novice and good bags for the lure fisherman.

With catch and release, fish mature to become natural feeders and take the dry fly, buzzer or nymph.

Spectacular evening rises are a feature from April till late autumn, with fish, including double figure fish, being taken on small nymphs, buzzers or dry flies - whilst not easy to catch, well worth the challenge and a good way to rear fine brown trout and classic rainbows for future years.

North Country Spiders

a must for any Fly Fisher

click the fly.

The materials used for tying NORTH COUNTRY SPIDER PATTERNS (also known in North America as SOFT HACKLE FLIES) have rarely changed over the past 300 years - Pearsall's silk, feathers from game birds such as Grey Partridge, Snipe, Woodcock and Grouse and others including Hen, Heron herl, Golden Plover, Starling, Brown and Tawny Owl - plus fur for dubbed bodies such as hare's mask and mole.

Another good resource for the north country spider.

FLY TYING THE NORTH COUNTRY WAY

Yorkshire spiders are the traditional wet trout and grayling fishing flies of the North of England they are soft hackle patterns which are deadly fished upstream or downstream. They represent a fly fishing tradition which goes back many many years and they remain in use today because they are effective and deadly when presented in the correct way. These flies are constantly in use on rivers throughout the British Isles and they will prove just as effective on any trout stream in the world.

The Land God Forgot

The lonely sunsets flare forlorn
Down valleys deadly desolate;
The lordly mountains soar in scorn
As still as death, as stern as fate.

The lonely sunsets flame and die;
The giant valleys gulp the night;
The monster mountains scrape the sky,
Where eager stars are diamond-bright.

So gaunt against the gibbous moon,
Piercing the silence velvet-piled,
A lone wolf howls his ancient rune --
The fell arch-spirit of the Wild.

O outcast land! O leper land!
Let the lone wolf-cry all express
The hate insensate of thy hand,
Thy heart's abysmal loneliness.

Keep in mind, any time you tie a knot, make sure that your line is wet so that it doesn't suffer line burn when you draw it tight. Most anglers use saliva.

Knot

The Clinch Knot is a very popular and effective knot. It is also easy to master.

Pass the line through the eye of the hook, or swivel.

Double back. make five turns around the line.

Pass the end of the line through the first loop,
above the eye, and then through the large loop.

Draw the knot into shape.

Slide the coils down tight against the eye.

Zermatt

Click Picture for link.

Fly fishing is a hugely popular sport worldwide and Switzerland shares this mutual passion, however Alpine fishing has always been a relatively inaccessible activity.  That is until now...

During the winter season the Alpine village of Zermatt is best known as one of the great ski resorts of the world. However in the summer months between June and September the mountain lakes surrounding Zermatt become the perfect location for flyfishing.

We will take you to a tranquil mountain lake which is nestled in a deep valley enclosed between steeply scarped mountains. The skyline is dominated by the huge and gracefully curved pyramid of the Matterhorn, which only serves to add to the beauty of this location...

cast-rite

So how do I cast-rite

You can use each of the handle sections by themselves to get used to the weight and feel, to vary and perfect your grip and to exercise those seldom used casting muscles in the hand, wrist and arms and get 'casting fit'
Use both handles, one in each hand, and let your other hand follow your dominant hand and develop casting with both hands.
You can put the two handles together to get the feel of a double handed rod and develop those extra muscles that are used in casting

the small handle and the flexible tip will copy a stream or small still water single handed fly rods. The click tip indicator in the flexible section will always tell you when you have got the back stop and forward

Welcome to Hans Weilenmann

Flytier's Page

4695 patterns and climbing by 258 tiers, fully illustrated & described

Hans Weilenmann is familiar to many as a demonstration tier at fly-fishing shows, both in Europe and North America. His articles and reviews have featured in several books and magazines, including Fly Fisherman magazine.

A keen student and teacher of fly-casting, Hans is an FFF master fly-casting instructor, EFFA master fly-casting instructor and a member of the EFFA certification advisory board. He calls Amstelveen, The Netherlands, his home, and the world's rivers his stomping grounds.

Hans has been tying flies for more years than he cares to remember. Simple, yet effective patterns for trout and grayling are his forte’. He has been known to tie flies too small to be seen by most anglers, but which are certainly noticed by the fish.

Another of Hans’ specialties is the use of cul de canard in a variety of patterns, notably in his signature fly.

His interest in fly-tying, macro photography, and a background in computing and networking, all came together in Fly tier's Page, a web site he created as a gallery of fly tiers the world over, and their patterns.

2009 Richard Wheatley National Rivers Final

This year’s final returned to Bolton Abbey on the River Wharfe in Yorkshire.

With the weather improving the river was in tremendous form with good fly hatches and fish being caught on nymphs and dry flies.

Top rod receiving the Tom Bilson trophy and 2009 Champion was Thomas Gott with a total of 25 fish; Tom is the first Youth to have held both the EYFA loch style and river titles.

On Saturday we held a Masterclass on Burnsall’s water immediately upstream to practice, leaving the Bolton Abbey stretch a rest the day before the competition. In practice we caught over 80 trout and grayling with fish up to 40cm about 1½ lb.

Along with some of the regular participants in the Rivers events it was good to see a number of new members enjoying the fishing on offer.

On Sunday we fished the competition, parents were enlisted as controllers, and we fished two 2½ hour sessions one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

The competition got off to a great start with fish being caught within the first couple of minutes. Top of the morning session was Terry Mann with 11 fish, closely followed by the 2008 Rivers Champion Rob Thomas.

In the afternoon Tom Gott had a superb session landing 17 fish, with Matthew Kidd in second place.

At the end of the match we all met up in the Village hall for food, results and Prize giving.

A total of 121 trout and grayling were caught giving a rod average of 11 fish.
Largest trout was 46cm caught by Rob Thomas, largest grayling was 39.8cm caught by Mark Harrison.

Results

Champion Thomas Gott
2nd Terry Mann
3rd Rob Thomas
4th Matthew Kidd
5th Oscar Boatfield
6th Carl Malpass

The results will go through to help select the World Team for 2010 which are to be held in Slovakia. The team and captain is traditionally announced at the AGM in December.

Nor logo

Click the logo for more info.

Developed by professional research engineer and fly tier Norm Norlander, the Nor-Vise and Automatic Bobbin are truly innovative tools.

Unlike other “rotary vises” that simply "rotate" to position the hook, the Nor-Vise is designed to “spin” the hook to apply material. With the hook shank held in perfect alignment with the axis of rotation (on centerline) it works like a lathe and provides for better thread tension control and more precise material placement.

Norm

About the Nor-Vise

Precision ball bearings and heavy brass hubs enable the Nor-Vise to also work like a spinning wheel for dubbing like you have never seen before. Perfectly shaped and textured bodies, with all the dubbing materials, can be created, without wax, better, faster, and much easier than by any other method.

Lots of other body materials such as lead, wire, tinsel, floss, chenille, plastics, etc. can also be "spun on" very quickly and smoothly. Another unique technique with the Nor-Vise is to use its spinning capability to "reinforce" materials such as herl and hackle with the working thread.

The Automatic Bobbin solves the problem of getting the bobbin out of the way, yet instantly having it right back to where it is needed. Holding the thread in alignment with the hook shank (on the Thread Post) the vise may be rotated or spun to wrap on materials without adding additional thread to the hook.

Like any new technology it takes a bit of practice to master, but you can, and you will then wonder how you ever did without it. The Nor-Vise and Automatic Bobbin will indeed "Tie Better Flies Faster".

Norm2

I personally rate this Fly Tying Vice as the best for both quality and innovation on the market.

For over 150 years, we have offered the strongest return policy in the business. We will refund your money on any purchase that isn't 100% satisfactory. Anytime, for any reason. It's that simple.

How Orvis makes it absolutely right:

The process of creating exceptional quality products begins when we design a new item. Samples are made, delivered to our office for review, and then are immediately sent out for testing. Watches, pants, socks, and shirts are all subjected to rigorous demands in active field trials—they’re bumped, banged, stretched, snagged by brambles, dunked in streams, and marched over mountains. According to their performances, adjustments are made, then revised samples are sent back to the field for more work. Only when an item is deemed “absolutely right” by our team does manufacturing begin.

Every step of the way, our dedicated associates work hard to ensure that the quality of every product surpasses your expectations. We care deeply about quality, and sell only what we ourselves would be proud to own or give as a gift.

'The Fraternity of Fly Fishers'

"The literature of fly-fishing is a minefield of disagreement ...on issues of momentous inconsequence."  Brian Clark and John Goddard, The Trout & The Fly [1980]

I've been incredibly lucky. Early exposure to the outdoors, fishing with my dad and grandfather brought me to fly fishing way ahead of schedule. Gramps relented and taught me to fly cast when I was eleven. The old European method, standing in the stream, hard-cover book under my right elbow with the warning, "now we aren't going to get the book wet are we dear."

About Us

The Glasgow Angling Centre story begins over 21 years ago in the famous Barrowland Market in Glasgow.

The Managing Director and owner Paul Devlin started with a small market stall in the Barras selling mostly second hand tackle but quickly progressed, due to demand, to a larger market stall. The first shop opened in the village of Cumbernauld, on the outskirts of Glasgow, which is still open to this day and is as welcoming as when it first opened.
As the shop was quite small every inch of space was taken up with as much choice as possible. It soon became the Mecca for anglers from all over the central belt of Scotland and beyond. The first shop was often described as an Aladdin's cave of fishing tackle.
In 2004 the flagship Glasgow Angling Centre was opened, and with 30,000 sq ft of space, it had the largest range of angling equipment in Europe and still has to this very day.

Glasgow Angling Centre's aim has always been to be a one stop shop for all anglers offering a vast range of tackle, for every aspect of angling, not just specialising in one discipline like many of its competitors. This is reflected in the staff at GAC. In the last 12-months staff have stalked wild trout in highland streams, chased tarpon in Florida, heaved up huge halibut in Norway and battled carp in France. GAC have extremely experienced staff, anglers to give the best advice to anglers. They pride themselves on their vast knowledge of all aspects of angling, and their enviable customer service levels.

They also have 4 members of staff who have proudly represented Scotland internationally in Fly Fishing and Coarse Angling. In addition 3 fully qualified instructors and coaches, therefore, if you need any advice GAC always has someone with the necessary skills and experience to help.

GFF

The Global FlyFisher started as a strike of luck, a flap of a butterfly's wing, a mere coincidence - more than 10 years ago.

By The GFF partners

As many other great web sites, The Global FlyFisher was built on good intentions by a bunch of guys who mostly by chance met through the Internet back when that was still a fairly uncommon way of getting in contact.

Partners

Two personal homepages
Back in 1994 and 1995 Steve Schweitzer and Martin Joergensen sat thousands of miles apart and maintained each their personal little addition to the already then growing wealth of web sites out there.

This took place back somewhere in the transition between the years 1994, 1995 and 1996. They had each built a page with information on their home waters: Steve had a site about the US Midwest and Martin a site that dealt with Denmark, the Baltic and Northern Europe.

Now, as people who made websites back then will know: keeping a homepage updated single-handedly in the infancy of the Internet was an odious task. Everything was static HTML and most was hand coded. Maintaining a site meant handling hundreds of documents, using dumb text editors, linking manually, uploading with ftp and going through all sorts of witchery to get the ends to meet.

In other words: it was quite a bit of work.

On top of that were the expenses. There were no cheap web hotels, connection was made through slow telephone dial-up and most software available for the task was commercial and cost money.
So it was work and expenses.
Not a winning combination...If you want more follow the link!! click on the GFF logo I did.

Our guests experienced excellent fishing during our last week of the
Season, Stefan Trottmann caught a Lake Trout of 101 cm and therefore became
a new member to our Trophy Club. Congratulations and well done! Besides
the Trophy there were more big fish up to 98 cm being caught. On one of
our trips we had two avid fly fishermen and despite the windy conditions
they managed to catch several big Lakers. They never gave up casting and
were rewarded with hard fighting fish on the fly rod. Fishing in the rivers
was world-class for four different species of fish. Several of our guests
managed the small grand slam; which means catching Whitefish,
Lake Trout, Grayling and Rainbow Trout on the same Due to uncertain weather
conditions we could not do any more fly out trips for the Silver Salmon at the
coast of Alaska. This was too bad as the fishing remains great till almost
middle of October. The week started with two beautiful and calm days.
During the rest of the week we experienced mostly cloudy skies with
occasional rain showers and mainly windy conditions.

Jesus, Moses and God are out fishing for Rainbow Trout at Westlow in the new boat.

Jesus gets out of the boat, walks on the water and starts casting in all directions with his black Mop. After an hour with no success he says "God damn it." "You must have more patience my son," God replies.

Moses then parts the water, gets out of the boat and starts walking on the dry land and starts casting on either side of him with his favorite White Mop. After an hour of no luck he says "God damn it" God replies "Patience is a virtue my son".

Moses gets back in the boat and the lake returns to normal.

God then borrows Jesus' Black Mop and proceeds to catch five large Rainbows. He then borrows Moses' White Mop and catches another five large Rainbows. Jesus turns to Moses and says "Who does God think he is anyway",

Fly Fishing for Beginners

Welcome to the Fly Fishing for beginners website, a "fly fishing 101" primer
where we aim to educate not only beginners but novices as well. If you're
looking for some darn good trout fly fishing basics and fly tying information
and resources, you've come to the right place

With this Fly Fishing for beginners site I aim to slowly walk the beginning fly fisher (and even the novice), one step at a time, through a quick and simple fly fishing for beginners course, learning the fly fishing basics and some of the equipment so they can make an informed decision before purchasing anything. Then we'll dig in to learn how to assemble the gear, the frequently used fly fishing knots, a little about trout behavior and the difference between the trout species and we'll even review some fly fishing etiquette. After that, we'll spend some time on fly tying in the Fly Tying 101 section. We'll start with the fly tying basics and then we'll discuss the tools and materials needed and then we'll review the more popular flies used for trout (including a hatch chart). I never had a true appreciation of fly fishing until I took a fly tying for beginners class and began tying my own flies. I hope that each person visiting this site will consider taking up fly tying themselves or at least trying it. I've found it to be very fulfilling and relaxing and a great winter time activity. There's nothing like catching a beautiful trout on an imitation that you tied yourself. In a sense this is a simplified Fly Fishing 101 and/or a Fly Tying 101 course.

Fly Guy

Dear Friends!

I am glad to welcome you to the MEGOFF website! For more than 14 years I have been producing fly reels for you. The first  MEGOFF fly reel by was designed and produced by me in 1996. I used my knowledge in aeronautical engineering and experience in the aerospace industry to create a comfortable and functional fly reel for myself.
Since then, many years have passed and I have designed and created a lot of reels, but every new reel is created in same way, as if I am making it for myself. I  produce a limited number of each reel model. Often, reels are made  as one of, unique, single items. Such approach raises the process of creating reels to an art. Reels by MEGOFF are not just superb fishing tools, but also the realization of my creative abilities. Since 1999, I have learnt to master the techniques and skills required to produce reels from titanium alloys. At the present time, the production of titanium reels is one of the main focuses of my work.
Recently, one of the aspects of my work has been the development of new reeldesigns under orders for other manufacturers. Years of experience and  the introduction of modern three-dimensional computer-aided design allows MEGOFF to successfully develop innovative and unique reels  that combine the best elements of modern and classic design. I am always glad of your interest to the MEGOFF reels and I am ready to personally answer your questions.

Bamboo Rod Maker & Guide

Italy

Why Bamboo rods?
I hear this question very often when I’m out guiding or at the various fishing shows around the country. Well, it’s difficult to answer but I do believe that there is something almost mystical about a handcrafted bamboo rod which is generated from a bulky culm of bamboo grown and harvested halfway across the globe. So what is it about bamboo rods? Perhaps it’s the thought of how much work goes into making one, or perhaps it’s like reliving the glorious past of fly fishing when men were men, and fish were fish? Well, I really cannot answer those questions although I’ve dedicated much thought on the matter but I can assure you that fishing with a bamboo rod whether it be a replica of the great masters of the past or a taper which has taken years of trial and error to create, gives you a magical feeling as if your were at peace with mother nature. An incredibly inspiring feeling.

Fly fishing in Tuscany and Umbria for trout and grayling? Yes, you've got it right. For the ultimate fly fishing experience under the Tuscan sun right in the middle of the land of Leonardo da Vinci, of Michelangelo and Giotto; in the land of Chianti, of Nobile di Montepulciano and Sassicaia wines!
